Welcome to Crail Golfing Society 1786

Several gentlemen in and about the town of Craill, who were fond of the diversion of Golf, agreed to form themselves into a Society to be known by the name of The Craill Golfing Society' So runs the inscription on the title page of the Society's first Minute Book of the seventh oldest golf club in Scotland, dated February 1786.

The Society play over two excellent seaside golf courses laid out on an historic spit of land known as Fifeness. The Balcomie course dates from the 19th century and was designed in part by the legendary Old Tom Morris, who stated 'there is not a better site for a course in Scotland'. It's fairways are all within sight of the sea, with the coastline coming into play on one third of the course. The Craighead Links, a newer course, overlooks the Isle of May, Bass Rock and the East Lothian coastline and presents a very challenging golf experience. The two courses compliment each other perfectly and represent the epitome of golf by the sea.

The clubhouse commands exceptional views over the North Sea and last four holes of Balcomie. On a late summer evening there are few more relaxing sights than watching the sun set over the Angus hills.

Craighead

In 1998, we added a second course, Craighead and this now looks set to join Balcomie as one of the "must play" courses in Scotland. American designer Gil Hanse studies, plays and is a mine of information on Scottish courses and Craighead features many of the best aspects of Scottish classic links. It has panoramic seascapes and country views and is perfectly located just south of the present clubhouse. Gil has made this a testing but fair challenge, however be warned - there are hungry bunkers aplenty. No two consecutive holes face the same direction and with constantly changing conditions, there is enough of a variety of shots to test any golfers ability. We think you will agree that Craighead is a worthy neighbour of Balcomie.

19th Hole

In 1786, members of the Crail Golfing Society would return to the Golf Inn for dinner after playing their monthly arranged matches.

Meals were grand events in those days - vast quantities of food and drink were consumed and most bets were settled in liquid form. Strict rules were enforced with equally liquid penalties - non appearance for a match would cost the offender a half mutchkin of punch and a similar penalty would be extracted for failure to wear the Societies uniform of scarlet jacket and plain yellow buttons.

Today, the dress code is thankfully more relaxed, however the tradition of fine dining and good conversation continues in the splendid surroundings of our clubhouse.
