Welcome to Scotscraig Golf Club 1817

In 1817, St Andrews and more particularly the St Andrews Society of Golfers, later to become the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, played a leading part in founding the Scotscraig Golf Club. Towards the end of the Napoleonic Wars some of the St Andrews members were beginning to feel that they would like more golf than the Society's occasional meetings afforded them and in August of that year Scotscraig Golf Club was established. Initially there were two meetings annually in Spring and Autumn and a gold medal was procured and played for at the Autumn meeting.

The course was originally six holes at Garpit this was extended to a nine hole course in 1888 and again extended to the 18 hole course that is played on now.The course and club continued to prosper and, for the past 30 years, has been used as a pre-qualifying venue when the Open Championship is held at St Andrews.

The clubhouse and course emanate a strong sense of tradition and hospitality while being, at the same time, exceptionally friendly. The course is not long by modern standards but requires judicious placement of the ball especially off the tee to avoid the whin and gorse that borders the fairways as well as allowing better approaches to well guarded greens which are generally true and fast. This course is an excellent test, mostly links terrain with some parkland type holes combining water and green-protecting trees, along with a clubhouse displaying memorabilia of the club's long history, golfers are assured of an experience they will not forget.
